Rural Sales Manager
Alastair Johnson is a third-generation farmer, growing up and working on his family’s property at Tintinara in the south-east of South Australia. He has been widely recognised as an innovator in agribusiness, maximising returns from diverse land, livestock and crop management.
Alastair gained broad experience early in the agribusiness industry, not only on the family property but diversifying into business studies, station work, mineral exploration, bore drilling and earthmoving. This has given him a unique understanding of how geology, soils, aquifers and irrigation relate to the agribusiness industry. Importantly he has been successful in reading market conditions and applying strategies to manage the diverse nature of the business including spread of landholdings, infrastructure development and management practices to navigate the fluctuating market cycles. Alastair has built and developed extensive cropping/pasture renovation programs, piggery, sheep and cattle enterprises and acquired large acreages at various locations in the upper south-east.
Alastair has brought a number of agricultural innovations to the family business. He was one of the earliest adopters of the batch farrowing system (now regarded as the national standard) and played an integral role in the development and design of piggery straw-based shelters which have been copied nationwide. Alastair designed a cost-effective clay delving machine to markedly increase carrying capacity and cropping viability in sandy soils as well as improving water security and decreasing reliance on high cost mains water through designing and constructing a major pipeline project between properties.
In 2019 Alastair moved on from the family business in search of new challenges, having grown the enterprise to encompass 5000 acres under crops, 10,000 ewes, 400 breeding cattle,100 acres of irrigation and a 1000-sow piggery. He retains some land at Tintinara and Coonalpyn.
Capitalising on his passion for agricultural real estate, Alastair looks forward to embracing the new challenge of representing rural clients who seek to diversify or divest their property holdings. His expertise and knowledge of rural properties and contacts in the agricultural business sector, in particular, will ensure not only that vendors get the best advice on how to represent their property, but that potential purchasers will gain a good understanding of the value and potential of their purchase.
